Leadership Theory
This might seem rather dry, but theory provides us with the framework which our learning can then be built upon. Besides the Ideal Leadership Model which is amplified in my book, Ideal Leadership: Time for a Change (Destiny Image, 2006), there are a few others that are very useful. Level 3 Leadership: Getting Below the Surface by James G. Clawson (Prentice Hall, 2005) is now in its third edition, and for good reason. Clawson encourages a leader to go beyond Level One (simply focusing on behavior) and Level Two (focusing on conscious thinking), but to dig into core values, assumptions, beliefs and expectations - Level Three Leadership. For those who wish to go even deeper, try Peter Koestenbaum's Leadership: The Inner Side of Greatness, A Philosphy for Leaders (Jossey-Bass, 2002). His theory involves what he terms "four strategies for greatness": vision (thinking big and new), reality (having no illusions), ethics (providing service), and courage (acting with sustained initiative.)
