"Lessons of Leadership" by Jack Stahl
by Larry
Jack Stahl is one of America's most successful young CEOs, managing both Coca-Cola and Revlon by the age of 50. But one of the primary concepts of Ideal Leadership is the Leadership Condition of "place" - which means that an individual needs to find the domain where they best fit. In this case, Stahl should stick to the boardroom and stay out of the writing room. His book on leadership: "Lessons on Leadership: The 7 Fundamental Management skills for Leaders at All Levels" offers little new to the genre.
To spoil the suspense, here are his 7 fundamentals:
- Leadership and Management,
- Creating a High-Capability Organization,
- Developing People,
- Brand Positioning with Consumers,
- Customer Relationship Management,
- Financial Strategy, and
- Influencing People.
Stahl calls them "frameworks for success," but most people who know much about business would recognize them as typical courses in an MBA program. For an individual who has headed up such a strategic position in two major global organizations, this is disappointing to say the least. Even the examples Stahl gives are rarely from personal experience, but rather stuff that any business grad student could have put together.
In short, Jack Stahl has put together another in a long line of leadership books written by successful CEOs who demonstrate again that though they have been effective leaders - they do not truly understand why. Stahl describes what has happened to him in very basic terms. Others have practiced the same things but did not have the same results. Leadership is obviously more than Stahl's Seven Fundamentals.
